C salary and hiring demand: pay bands and job posting trends
Reviewed by Mark Dickie · Last updated
C is a low-level programming language used for operating systems, firmware, embedded controllers and performance-sensitive libraries. This page reports what the C job market pays and how often employers are hiring for it, as of October 2026. The salary band pools every C role together, so it is not split by experience level. Hiring demand shows whether postings that name C are rising, flat or falling over the period, and the two read best side by side.
How do you read the C salary and demand tables?
| Figure | What it measures | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Salary percentiles (25th, median, 75th) | Pay across C roles in embedded, systems, kernel and application work, pooled into one band | The 25th percentile is a floor for the whole market. An offer below it is under the C market, whatever the niche. |
| Hiring-demand series | Count of postings that name C as a required skill, tracked over time | A line rising while the median stays put means more openings chasing the same pay. |
| Posting context | Keywords that appear alongside C, such as arm-none-eabi-gcc, SPI, I2C or Yocto | Postings that name a microcontroller toolchain point to embedded work, which pays and hires on a different track from userspace C. |
- Settle on a niche before you read the band. Embedded firmware, kernel code and userspace tools hire differently, so check the posting context first.
- Compare the median to your current offer, not to the top of the band. The top of the band is where a few specialists sit.
- Watch the hiring line across several quarters. One month's dip or spike says little about the market.
- Test the skill against the work itself. Write a small program that calls malloc, frees the memory on every return path, and compiles clean under gcc -Wall -Wextra -fsanitize=address.

Hiring demand over time
We need 3 complete months of tracking before we publish a month-by-month series. Months we only partly covered are left out rather than shown as low demand.
